It’s common parlance in the churches to hear language like this….
“Give God everything.”
“Don’t hold withhold anything from Him.”
“He deserves it all.”
While I’m not here to dispute the truthfulness of these words, I would like to say what many of us know to be true.
More often than not, we don’t feel like we can give God everything. We hold things from him. And we may not feel like he deserves all that we’re asked to give him. Or we may not feel like we can do that.
And I’d like to say loud and clear…..that’s ok.
It’s ok if these encouragements sound like discouragements.
It’s ok if you’re holding things back.
It’s ok if you’re wrestling with God and struggling to trust Him.
It’s ok.
That kind of feeling is perfectly imperfect.
When everyone is telling you to go a mile for God but you only feel like you can go an inch……go an inch.
When everyone is telling you to give God 100% of your heart but today, you’re only able to give him the next 2%….give God your 2%.
This might sound like lousy advice but I think it’s liberating.
In any meaningful relationship, we have to be honest about where we are right now for deeper intimacy to develop later. Our relationship with God is no different. We have to be honest with him about our current state if we’re ever going to move deeper.
What does this look like in real life? That’s between you and the LORD.
But don’t be so intimidated by the mile ahead, that you miss the next inch.
