I love spring.
The dark, short days of winter are behind us and the long days of summer possibilities are ahead. In this blooming in between the air seems a bit crisper, the grass greener and the hopes of a new season endless.
And as the temperature rises, the flowers begin to bloom, and the sun stays out longer I can’t help but find every excuse to go for a walk.
The magic of walking
I’m not sure why but there’s magic in a good walk.
Augustine famously quipped that “it is solved by walking.” The it in question being….well, anything.
Ingmar Bergman, the famous director and artist, insisted on walking daily before getting to work because “demons hate fresh air.”
A pedestrian savior
Jesus himself walked most places.
In fact, many of his greatest moments of healing and teaching came in the context of walking.
As he walked, a women in need of healing reached out to touch his garment for healing and the faithful Centurion sought the Lord’s healing mercy for his servant. While walking he taught his disciples and healed those with leprosy.
In one of my favorite passages, the resurrected Jesus walks with two disciples, explaining how all of the Old Testament points to him.
Walking led to divine revelation.
Go for a walk
Take this as divine permission to get up and go for a walk. Magical things happen when we step beyond the corridors of our homes, offices, and classrooms.
Fresh air has a special way of re-invigorating and reorienting us. Making us alive to the God who is with us and the world he created.
So go outside!
You never know what awaits.
