Everyone wants to be happy.
But how? How can we achieve the sense of happiness and arrival we long for?
More often than not, the path to this is in the form of accrual. To achieve the peace we want, we strive for more.
More money.
More square feet.
More promotions.
More possessions.
More attention.
But like a never ending treadmill, the more we gain the more we hunger for what we don’t have. And the vicious cycle continues.
The path forward
Instead of having more, Christ calls us to being more.
More compassionate.
More others-oriented.
More patient.
More zealous for good.
To look beyond the illusion of amassing more to the development of our whole being. To no longer live for ourselves but for others, giving freely all that we possess to love and serve those in our midst. To pursuing lives marked by love, generosity, faith, solidarity, and hope.
To make decisions based on the Kingdom which is coming not on building our own kingdom here.
To amass for ourselves treasures in heaven “where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matt 6:20-21 NIV).
The path of wholeness
The truth is that having more brings temporary happiness while being more doesn’t simply bring happiness—it provides wholeness.
By being more concerned with the kingdom of God we’ll find ourselves whole and more alive than ever before.
So let’s not worry so much about having more.
Let’s be restless in our pursuit of being more.
